Marketing using QR codes
What are QR codes?
‘QR’ stands for ‘Quick Response' and the code displays as, essentially, a square box of black and white blocks similar to this:

But it’s what's in the code that makes it really exciting. Embedded in the image is a website address which, when scanned by a mobile phone, takes the user immediately to the web page.
Each QR code is unique and can be used on websites, on your business stationery, at the point of sale, and in print adds.
How do I use QR codes?
If you have face to face contact with your customers, if you sell online or if you do mail order, using QR codes can find you new customers, or encourage existing customers to buy more often or spend more each time they buy from you.
What's on the web page you’re directing people to is entirely up to you but it would be an wasted opportunity to simply take them to the home page. Much better to create a special landing page, or pages, for your QR code destination to give your customers something of value when they visit. Examples are:
- Free offers or discounts that encourage customers to spend more with you
- Collect email addresses in return for a free guide or additional information
- Promotional videos
- More detailed product information, and a buy now button
- Demonstrations or instructions on how to use your product

Checks to make before you start
- Do your landing pages display properly on mobile devices!
- Will your customers be able, or likely, to scan it
- Where is the most suitable place for you to display it
- Is the offer relevant to your customers
- Does offer help you achieve your goals
- Is it a good offer!
- Can you measure the effectiveness of each QR code you use
Use different pages with different offers and messaging to suit where the visitors have come from (eg from your website, after seeing you at an exhibition, after receiving your business card etc). You can measure the effectiveness of each by monitoring the traffic to that page.
How do customers use my QR code?
Using QR codes has become possible due to the increasing use of mobile smart phones. Customers use your QR code by scanning it with their phone which takes them directly to the webpage you want them to go to. To scan a QR code your customers need to download a free scanning application from their mobile phone provider’s web page or online shop. Your QR code can then be scanned using their mobile’s camera.
Wherever you use a code give instructions on what you want customers to do.
How do I create a QR code?
To create your QR codes get a QRDroid App for your smart phone or use the Google chart wizard (Click 'view complete gallery' and scroll to the right. Click the QR code picure and follow the instructions).
This video we found on YouTube will give you some great ideas of how you could use QR codes once you've created them!
