Business Phone Number and Call Handling Service
You don't need to have an additional telephone line installed if you want a separate telephone number for your business. Get a virtual business phone number instead.
The virtual phone number is your published telephone number and you divert your incoming calls to any other number of your choice. So if you’re working from home you'd divert your business calls to your home phone number. And if you’re out on the road simply divert your calls to your mobile phone. Using call forwarding in this way gives you complete flexibility over where and when you receive your business phone calls, and you won’t miss any more calls just because you’re out.
When you look for a provider of phone numbers for your business, it's worth checking that they can port numbers to another network if you should ever decide to move to another service provider. If they can't you'll be locked into them forever, unless you're prepared to go to the expense and inconvenience of changing your phone number.
We use Teleproject UK to deliver a telephone number and call handling service to our clients, and we can recommend their service because we use them ourselves!

The Business Phone Number Service
With the standard service you'll get:
- A UK phone number starting with either 01, 02, 03 as standard (memorable numbers and 08 numbers are available for an additional cost)
- Call forwarding to one number (can be a landline or a mobile number). This is the one-to-one option.
- Call Whisper so when you pick up the phone you know it’s a business call
- An Office Opening Hours feature, so all calls received outside of these hours will go to voicemail (or to a telephone answering service if you have one)
- Online access so you can monitor call stats or change the routing options at any time
Optional extras
- Hunt Group Routing for if you have more than one number you want to divert calls to. The routing can be set either to try each number in sequence OR to simultaneously ring up to 9 numbers at the same time. This is the one-to-many option.
- Auto Attendant, which gives the caller up to 4 department options, such as “press 1 for sales, 2 for accounts” and so on.
call 0333 200 2539 for more information and to set up these optional extras
How it all works
- Someone dials your business phone number
- The phone number you’ve diverted your phone calls to rings, you pick up and speak to the caller. If you’ve set up Call Whisper you’ll hear a short introductory message when you pick up the call.
- If the line you’ve diverted to is busy or there’s no answer after a specified number of rings, the call will go to voice mail or your call answering service.
- If you’ve set up your Office Opening Hours and the caller calls outside of these times they will be diverted to voicemail or your call answering service
The extra options
- If you’ve chosen Hunt Group Routing the call is either:
- routed to the first number in the list, if that’s busy or there’s no answer the call is routed to the 2nd number in the list, if that’s busy or there’s no answer it will try the 3rd, and so on. If the call cannot be connected to any number in the hunt group it can be routed to voice mail or to an answering service, or the routing cycle can be repeated
- OR up to 9 numbers will ring simultaneously. Any one of the numbers can pick up the call and as soon as the call is answered the other phones in the group will stop ringing.
- If you’ve chosen Auto Attendant the caller is asked to enter the department they want to speak to. The phone call is then diverted to the number set up for that option. If the call cannot be connected after a pre-set number of rings it will be routed to voice mail or your answering service
Note: throughout the whole call routing process the caller will just hear a ring tone until their call is connected.

The benefits of having a business phone number
- You can easily identify business calls from personal calls. With the ‘call whisper’ feature you’ll hear a short announcement when you pick up the phone to announce it’s a business call so you can answer appropriately.
- You choose where to divert phone calls to. To your home phone number, to an office you share, to your mobile phone, or to a telephone answering service. Your callers will always be able to get through and you’ll never miss another call.
- You can monitor the success of different marketing campaigns by using a different number for each one. The online call stats will enable you to monitor the calls and so measure the performance of each activity. And if you need to answer each type of call differently use the call whisper service to announce each one, eg “jim’s sales” or “magazine advert”.
- You can appear to have a presence in another town or even country by using different geographical numbers. For example you could publish a London number, a Manchester number and an Edinburgh number, and use call forwarding to route all the business calls to your office in Bristol.
